Mommy Makeover: Scars

After giving birth and caring for a newborn, many mothers feel self-conscious about their bodies. A mommy makeover, which typically includes a combination of procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction, can help restore a woman's pre-baby body and boost her self-confidence. But one question that many women have about mommy makeovers is: will there be scars?

The answer is yes, there will be scars after any surgery. However, the appearance and location of the scars will depend on the specific procedures being performed and the individual patient's healing process.

Scarring After Breast Procedures

If you are planning to have a breast augmentation, breast lift, or both, the incisions will be made around the areola or in the crease under the breast. These incisions are generally well-hidden and will fade over time. It is important to follow your plastic surgeon's instructions for scar care to help minimize the appearance of the scars.

Scarring After a Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, involves an incision from hip to hip across the lower abdomen. The scar will be located in the lower abdomen and will be visible when wearing a swimsuit or low-waisted pants. Like all scars, it will fade over time, but it will not disappear completely.

Scarring After Liposuction

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that removes excess fat from specific areas of the body using a thin, hollow tube called a cannula. The incisions for liposuction are small and generally well-hidden. The scarring will depend on the size and location of the area being treated.

Minimizing Scarring

There are several things you can do to minimize scarring after your mommy makeover:

  • Follow your plastic surgeon's instructions for scar care, including keeping the incisions clean and covered, as well as using any recommended ointments or dressings.

  • Avoid exposing the incisions to the sun for at least six months after your surgery.

  • Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for the recommended amount of time to allow the incisions to heal properly.

  • Don't pick at the scabs or try to remove the stitches yourself.

If you are considering a mommy makeover and have concerns about scarring, it is important to discuss this with your plastic surgeon. Dr. Emily Borsting, a world-class plastic surgeon in Bend, Oregon, can provide a consultation and help you decide if a mommy makeover is right for you. She will also be able to explain the scarring process and how to minimize the appearance of any scars.
